Three films you shouldn't see.

Because they are about 'genius' horrid men who are selfish and horrid. And boring. And womanising.

I usually like musical films, but these were ghastly.

De-Lovely
Do you like Cole Porter? I like his music. I like it a lot less after watching De-Lovely, though. How about a musical about a man who can't sing (and neither can the actor portraying him)? How about a musical about a man who can't sing or be faithful to his wife? How about a musical about a man who can't sing and who has gay affairs and breaks his wife's heart? Ugh.
To be honest, I slept through most of it, which may discount my opinion; however, what I did see bored and disgusted me. Avoid this film.

All That JazzOK, so I didn't watch all of this one either. But what I saw of it was lame and dull and monotonous and horrid. The main character was a puffed up little womanising git. Ew. Plus, there were icky scenes and no worthwhile characters.

Nine

Ditto all the above, only slightly better. Why are there so many stories about nasty egotistical men in show business? And why do people feel the need to write long, dull, ugly films about it?

There's A Place For Us...

Saw West Side Story with Kristen last week. Twas incredible - and oh, there aren't words. It did this miraculous thing for me - instead of intense irritation at their foolishness I felt pity and sorrow for the characters. The actors were brilliant - the singing! Ah! Goosebumps! The dancing!!!!!! (I know multiple exclamation points are a sign of insanity - but I can't help myself...)

I really want to go see something at the State Theatre (Hannah & I saw Sinead O'Connor sing there a few years back)... here's why...

Unfortunately, the only thing showing in the near future that I'd be willing to pay money for is The Nutcracker... and I don't think anyone I know will be particularly crazy about joining me...

Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

Hello, poppets all, I hired On The Town from the library- tried to watch it last night - got halfway through and kaput! The darned DVD was all scratched up. So peeved. It looked like fun - and a great cast... and I am so addicted to watching Gene Kelly dance...

I have a gigantical list of things I ought to be doing... and am not. But I don't feel too rotten. Had dinner with beloved grandparents and chilled out with more Jeeves and Wooster.
I miss my baby brother. I saw him yesterday. But today was nice, despite a few hiccups like mud and dirty nappies and such. I work with such lovely kiddies :)

Procrastinators Unite... Tomorrow...

I should be writing an essay... right now. The question is 'Discuss this view of the Gothic mode in relation to the two texts of your choice: "excess, excess in moral terms, excess of realism into the supernatural [and] formal excess."' What does that even mean? *Wracks brain*

I don't understand! 'Realism into the supernatural'?

Wading through looooong lectures and readings... ugh.

My head is aching. This thing is due on Friday! Panic!

He moves from point to point with as little uproar as a jellyfish.

Tonight I'm going to a homeschool drama production that I'm not in :( It will be nice though; I love going to any kind of theatrical do (though the real fun's backstage) and I'll get to see some of my lovely peeps...

Spent the afternoon studying the Arthurian legend... and making a list of places to go when I finally get to England :-P
Reading The Mists Of Avalon at the moment for uni. Hate it. A lot. I'm probably not studying it for a while but it's such a ginormous book that I thought I might as well start it now. Icky silly book, with all it's dodgy pagan religious stuff. Blatantly contradicting its own views every few pages. I'll write a proper rant on it one of these days. Aaaand I hate all the characters. Not a fully fleshed out one yet, and I'm 160 pages in.

Now I must go and garb mineself in something a little more glamourous than my current outfit...

What with excellent browsing and sluicing and cheery conversation and what-not the afternoon passed quite happily.

Mike nodded. A sombre nod. The nod Napoleon might have given if somebody had met him in 1812 and said, "So, you're back from Moscow, eh?".

Having recently (as in the last few months) discovered the genius of P. G. Wodehouse, today I indulged and bought myself a 'Wooster and Jeeves' book. Anybody who hasn't yet succumbed to the pure, charming delight of Wodehouse ought to be forcibly made to sit down and read even a few chapters of his work. Particularly people in need of a pick-me-up. As I read I am filled with a satisfying, warming feeling that everything will be OK, because the inimitable Jeeves, no matter how fate conspires, always comes through. He always does. And so beautifully too. With calm and style.

Just imagine how thrilled I am to discover that Wodehouse wrote lyrics for musicals! Yes, indeedy! I have found a whole list of musicals hereto-unheard-of-by-me, with titles like:

Miss 1917

The Girl With The Gun

The Golden Moth

Sitting Pretty

I have also discovered two that I have heard of: 'Show Boat' (which had great songs but was a terrible bore) and 'Anything Goes' (which I haven't seen but am dying to because I love the songs so very much!)

Percy continued to stare before him like a man who has drained the wine cup of life to its lees, only to discover a dead mouse at the bottom.

I turned to Aunt Agatha, whose demeanour was now rather like that of one who, picking daisies on the railway, has just caught the down express on the small of the back.
The Inimitable Jeeves (1923)

A while ago I read a biography of J. M. Barrie. It was disillusioning and disappointing, as just about all biographies are, but I learned this incredibly fabulous fact. The very clever author of 'Peter Pan' created a cricket club with a great many of the other clever and wonderful writers of his time! It included such luminaries as: H.G Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jerome K Jerome, G.K. Chesterton, A.A. Milne and P. G. Wodehouse. In a spectacular burst of self-indulgence I (quite accidentally, too) I bought books by Wodehouse, Chesterton and Jerome, all without remembering their singular connection! Now, I adore just about all of these writers, and I have decided that if ever a time machine were to come into my possession I would make my first stop a visit to one of these cricket matches, and I would watch in adoration as my heroes lost heroically, because they were reportedly the worst cricket players of their time...
Whilst I'm on the subject of good things, I have just remembered a diary entry of, let me see... there is no date, but I noted that it was a Wednesday, in August; in which I listed things that affected my mental health. I rather like the lists I made.

Things that are good for my sanity:
Genevieve
David Tennant
Tea
Oscar Wilde
Flight Of The Concords
Singing
Oranges
Kristen
P G Wodehouse

Things that dent my sanity:

Changing trains
Falling asleep on my bedroom floor (an unfortunately common occurrence)
Onions
Carelessness
Emo lyrics
And toddler tantrums

And now I must say 'Toodle pip, old crumpet!' until next time :)
read the printed word!
