Most are horribly heartbreaking and sad, but mostly inspiring and educational.
Schindler's List

This film will smash your heart into little tiny pieces of horror. Everybody needs that sometimes.
The Final Days of Sophie Scholl

La vita è bella (Life is Beautiful)

This film has a strange case of mood whiplash - the first half is an Italian romantic comedy; the last half is bittersweet tragedy of the heartrending kind.
Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas)

I know, I know, this film is set in WWI, not WWII, but I love it so much I'm going to stick it on this list here. The story it tells is one of the most lovely and bizarre war stories I think I've ever heard.
Defiance

Films I don't particularly recommend:
The Boy in Striped Pajamas - too depressing
Atonement - too distressing
Pearl Harbour - too badly made
The Great Escape - too dull and too sad
Have you seen The Devils Arithmetic?
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't - is it a WWII film? Recommended?
ReplyDeleteI recommend 'The Pianist' (WWII) if you haven't already seen it. Gosh, there have been so many but I can't remember their titles...
